Emotional insecurity and anxiety are acid that eats away at stone statue. People think as long as they contain the acid enough that it doesn't digest the entire statue, they've won. As long as they are not annihilated, they're alive. They don't see how the pits provide footholds for "the Devil", or dig out caves for space slugs in the asteroid of their stone. Joy is a base. Simple enjoyment is alkaline.
